smile At last, someone who also served on 203, i was starting to wonder if i was the last of the old workhorse groundcrew, thank you navtopilot for restoring my faith.
I'm sure our paths would have crossed on many occasions, especially when on SAR standbys,Long flights following the russians across the northern seas, trips to the never never lands of Bodo and Iceland, the westabout, the wonderful exotical places such as machrahanish, and other wonderful outlands.
Yes, i know, not much fraternisation between us "groundies" and the crews, but i bet a few of us riggers made a mountainful of coffee for you brave navs stuck looking into those screens and map boards while we flew as groundcrew.
Sad times as well when we lost a kite near Cambletown, some of the crew were buried in the local churchyard, i remember the burial detail well, sad times.
But we had good times as well.
Nice to know you're on board here, this forum is really good, i think you'll enjoy linking up with others you may have served with at Ballykelly and Malta.
Regards to you David.
Paul.

I'm posting this info for those who may remember some of the people, flights ect, and although on H&R flight with 203,they may also include 210 as well.
My flying times in Shackletons.
WR 957, Flt/Lt Smith on a flypast to RAF Kinloss
11/9/65, WR 957, Flt/Lt Appleford,Ballykelly to Keflavik
11/9/65, WR 957,  "            "        Keflavik to Bodo
14/9/65, WR 957,  "            "        Bodo to Ballykelly
20/9/65, WR 957,  "            "        Ballykelly to Gibralter
24/9/65, WR 957,  "            "        Gibralter to Ballykelly
What i dont have, are the dates and times of the flights in a Brittania on a Westabout, or the detachments to Patuxent River USA, or the Detachment to Boca Chica Naval base in Florida USA.
Included on the home run when o/nt in Malta, we were asked to do a flight demo for the Italian Navy/Airforce, on sea rescue exercize, and we were then hosted for 2 days in Rome for our troubles and spent the layover in the Lloyd Hotel in Rome.
It was on this trip home that we heared of the incident of one of the returning Shacks had engine troubles and had to do and emergency into Barcelona?( anyone remember this one)
The time scale of these Detachments would be from 65' to 70', when i was Demobed.
If anyone was on the Boca Chica trip, they may remember the incident of my appearence at a court martial as a witness to theft of my metal repair tools by one of the US ground crew.
We shared our repair and flight offices with the airfield fire crew hangars.
Just as an aside, does anyone remember a Flt/Lt L.C.Webb, Engineering Officer on 203/210 or H&R flight 65'To 70' era?

Looks like you don't know about the 203 Squadron Yahoo group. Bryn Wayt is administering it so have a look at these links for info on old members of the squadron.

Yahoo Group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/203sqn/?yguid=227301408

203 Sqdn photos, contacts and info:
http://raf-luqa.weebly.com  and register on the forum for discussions.

On the website there is also info about a book Colin Pomeroy has written about operations and detachments '203 Squadron - The Malta Years'.

All the best
Dave Rose

Dave, I saw on the website the name of David Briggs. Could that possibly Cpl. Dave Briggs who used to be on Stn.Flt. at St.Mawgan in the early sixties?

Hi Bernie, I don't know if it's the same bloke. Was it on the RAF Luqa Website or was it on the forum?
I'm off out just now or I'd have a search myself.
Cheers

Hi Paul.

I was posted to 210 as a brand new Sgt armourer in 1965 and served there until the instigation of H&R in that little white hut beside the perri track, so I guess we were there at the same time.  My abiding memory of H&R was the god awful shift system.  I left for Muharraq in 1968.

I was a passenger on Mike Bondesio's A/C that fell into Lisbon on 13 Dec 1967 on 2 inboard Griffons and the port Viper.  I vowed never to fly in Shacks after that episode.  I would be interested to hear from any of the crew/passengers on that trip.  Names that come to mind are Roy Craig, engineer and Pete Langhan, Siggie/AEoP.

Brian (Sach) Goodwin.

Just to reiterate David Rose's point made a few posts back about the 203 Sqn website run by Bryn Wayt. Also reference to the 100 years and squadron closure in Anglesy in 2014 with details by Colin Pomeroy. It's a really good website, plenty of information and photographs to scan through . David Rose also administers a really good website for anyone based in Malta over the years and I recommend anyone with an interest, to contact both websites.
